Putting out the Fire: Reducing Health Risks with Smoking Cessation

Activity Description: Smoking and tobacco use are associated with significant risks and quitting smoking can significantly improve one’s health. This presentation will review the benefits to smoking cessation and counseling strategies to help patients quit smoking. Audience members will also learn about the pharmacologic agents that can be used to help with smoking cessation and how to design personalized treatment plans.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, the Pharmacist will be able to:

  • List the health benefits and risk reduction associated with tobacco cessation
  • Describe counseling strategies and pharmacologic therapies used in smoking cessation
  • Design a personalized treatment plan for smoking cessation

At the completion of this activity, the Pharmacy Technician will be able to:

  • Review health consequences caused by smoking or use of nicotine-containing products
  • Identify medications used in smoking cessation
  • Differentiate between prescription and over-the-counter medication options used in smoking cessation
